Maybe you’ve moved into a new house, renovating or building a new home and need to plan the interior lighting from scratch or you’ve simply decided to update the lighting around your home. A good lighting plan is essential to create the right atmosphere.
Lighting can make or break a room. Not only does a good lighting plan make a room look better, it also makes it function better and provides an important safety element. A deep analyse and good understanding of the mission of each room is an important prerequisite for the creation of a lighting plan.
This way you can consider tasks performed in a space and provide functional and creative lighting.
Every room should have a mix of three types of lighting: ambient, task and accent.
Also referred to as general lighting, general light provides a room with overall illumination. Ambient lighting is typically provided by overhead lighting such as pendants, semi-flush/flush mount ceiling fixtures, ceiling fans, or chandeliers, but it can also be provided by table lamps, floor lamps and sconces.
Task lighting is your practical light. It means that when you’re performing specific activities you can see what you’re doing. In a kitchen, this could be the sink, over the counters, or over the stove. Task lighting may be part of the general lighting, or additional localized or portable fixtures. Their style and finish should match the decor of the space since they are typically visible.
Accent lighting is for aesthetic purposes. It allows you to highlight different parts of your room, or features like pictures, fireplaces or ornate pieces of furniture. The right accent light can draw attention to an area and set a mood.Accent lighting is most effective when the light creating the focal point is three times as bright as the surrounding space.
